이완교는 동양 사상이 추구하는 도(道)와 비움의 의미를 전하고자 한다. 눈과 귀가 아닌 마음으로 보고 듣고, 다시 그 마음이 아닌 기로 느끼는 것이 우주의 도를 스스로 얻는 방법이다.
동양의 오랜 전통인 수묵화를 연상시키는 그의 작품에서 물리적 감상을 넘어 마음으로 느끼는 평화와 안정의 기쁨을 얻는다.
그가 풍경을 통해 보는 세상은 열반(涅般, Nirvana)이다. 탐욕과 노여움 그리고 어리석음이라는 삼독(三毒)을 내려놓고 도달하는 세계가 열반의 세계이다. 그 초월의 세계에 참다운 아우라(aura)가 있다. '구체적인 무엇임'을 초월한 '이다(being)'라는 본질의 세계인 것이다.
동양에서는 검은색과 흰색을 모든 색의 근원으로 생각한다. 흑과 백의 농도차이를 통해 원금감을 표현함으로써 사물 뒷면에 감추어진 심원을 표현한다. 이완교의 사진에 담긴 흑색은 끝없이 변화하는 심오한 우주의 기를 상징하며 동양의 시각으로 바라보는 평와 고요의 즐거움을 얻을 수 있다.
